SOP: Aligning 3D Scan in RapidShell3D
The following illustrates a standard operating procedure (SOP) for aligning a 3D foot scan in RapidShell3D.
Prerequisites
Prescription loaded into RapidShell3D
Refer to the following guide for more information:
Goals
Procedure
Click Files → Display Left Foot

A 3D scan of the patient’s left foot should now appear on the screen

Click Place Points
Â
In specific order, click the Heel Point → 1st MPJ Centre Point → 5th MPJ Centre Point

Click Align for Valgus or Align for Varus
The prescription form may contain values for Forefoot Varus or Forefoot Valgus. If such values exist, please click the corresponding button.Â
Click Accept

Click Apply
The Distances box will display a distance between the Heel Centre point and 1st MPJ centre point that were placed on the 3D scan surface during Step 4. If a prescription value exists for Heel Centre to 1st MPJ (mm) a Scale Factor will appear and allow for automatic scaling of the 3D scan. Please note that it is not recommended to scale 3D scans captured with the LaserCAM VPS 3D scanner, or any other scanner that is known to capture highly accurate 3D foot scans.Â
Position the scan in the Plantar view using the controls along the bottom toolbar

Position the scan in the Heel view using controls along the bottom toolbar according to a provided Acceptable Reference Measurement.
Method 1: Heel Bisection Measurement

You may use the blue Z-axis line to reference the heel bisection in neutral (0°). You can then use the Invert and Evert controls from the bottom toolbar to rotate the scan into the alignment specified in the Scan Angle field on the prescription.Â
Method 2: Forefoot Varus/Valgus Alignment Method
SOP: Forefoot Varus/Valgus Measurement
If a Forefoot Varus or Forefoot Valgus measurement has been recorded on the prescription form, RapidShell3D will automatically rotate the 3D scan to this value. You will need to measure the alignment to ensure that you have accurately rotated the 3D scan.Â

Position the scan in the Medial view so that the blue Z-axis line is breaking through the heel of the scan at approximately 20mm in height

Your 3D scan should now be aligned in RapidShell3D, and you should be ready to generate your orthosis model.
