EXO-L
The EXO-L Ankle Brace is a custom-made, 3D-printed device designed to prevent ankle sprains by acting as an external ligament. Unlike traditional braces that restrict movement, the EXO-L allows full range of motion during regular activities and only provides support when an ankle sprain is imminent. This innovative approach offers protection without compromising performance or comfort.
Design and Functionality
The EXO-L system comprises three main components:
Cord: Functions as an external ligament, enhancing the strength of the ankle's natural ligaments.
Patch: Attached to the exterior of the user's shoe, it serves as an anchor point for the cord, utilising the shoe's structure for support.
Shell: A 3D-printed component that fits precisely over the ankle bones, ensuring stability and distributing pressure evenly to prevent discomfort.
Evidence Supporting EXO-L's Efficacy
A study published in The American Journal of Sports Medicine evaluated the mechanical functionality of the EXO-L Ankle Brace. The research demonstrated that the brace significantly restricts the combined motion of inversion and plantar flexion - movements commonly associated with ankle sprains - without limiting normal dorsiflexion and plantarflexion. This indicates that the EXO-L effectively prevents motions leading to sprains while preserving natural ankle mobility.
EXO-L UP
The EXO-L UP is an innovative ankle brace designed to assist individuals experiencing foot drop - a condition characterised by difficulty lifting the front part of the foot due to muscle weakness or paralysis. This brace enhances mobility by facilitating ankle dorsiflexion, thereby improving foot clearance during walking and reducing the risk of trips and falls.
Design and Functionality
The EXO-L UP comprises a custom-made shell that fits around the ankle and attaches to the user's footwear via specialised patches. An adjustable cord connects the front of the ankle to the front of the shoe, actively assisting in lifting the foot during the swing phase of gait. Additionally, a lateral strap acts as an external ligament, preventing excessive inversion and providing lateral stability. This design ensures adequate ground clearance and reduces the risk of stumbling, all while allowing natural movement in other directions. The brace is lightweight, low-profile, and easily concealed under clothing, offering a comfortable and discreet solution for daily use.
The EXO-L UP has been designed align with established practices in managing foot drop. The brace's ability to assist dorsiflexion and prevent inversion is consistent with therapeutic approaches aimed at improving gait mechanics and reducing fall risk in individuals with foot drop. Clinical experiences and patient testimonials suggest that the EXO-L UP offers a comfortable and effective alternative to traditional AFOs, with advantages in weight, profile, and ease of use.
